My name is Jennifer Louise Buddie Karas. I grew up in Brunswick, Ohio. I received a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art from Bowling Green State University. My focus was in large-scale figurative bronze/iron casting as well as painting.
In 2004 I met my husband, Jason Karas. I collaborated on several projects for his business, J.K. Kreations, which creates realistic and cartoony characters, animals and creatures for theme parks, museums and television. Some of our clients at the time included, The Toledo Zoo, Ottawa Elementary Elementary School, The Magic Woods (a children's TV show), and The Westwood School of Horrors.
After our daughter, Olivia, was born I became a stay at home mom. My mother began teaching me to sew clothes and quilts for my daughter. Wanting to spend time with Olivia, my work transitioned into a new medium, fiber. It was a difficult transition but it became easier with patience and practice. I had the best teacher, my mother Eileen Buddie.
I spent the next two years reading and researching to find a niche with this new medium. I found myself overwhelmingly inspired by puppetry and my daughter. I had a strong desire to make puppets, but I wasn't sure how I could make a living at it.
Then one Christmas my mother made a fleece hat for Olivia. Being the character she is, life was brought to the hat as she wore it. This inspired a lot of “what-ifs” that became the foundation of Olivia's Kloset. Soon thereafter, the monster hat was born.
After my second child, Oskar, was born, we decided we were going to put things into motion and did our first season of shows throughout Ohio. We were overwhelmed and grateful by all of the support given by our customers. The enjoyment and sense of humor that our world brought to so many people propelled us to diversify our product line for our “monster enthusiasts.”
Each and every year our business has grown. We have consistently added a few more shows and are constantly developing new ideas. It all began with hats, but now we make purses, messenger bags, dolls, gloves, pillow blankets, headbands, eyeglass cases, key-chains, and boogie monster's (Kleenex holder's).
After 4 years in production and development my personal favorite product is about to make its debut from our creative Kloset, the puppets.
Olivia’s Kloset could have never opened its "Kloset doors" without the love, support, inspiration and multitude of life lessons I have gained from my family, friends and all of you “monster enthusiast's” out there. Thank you!
